Akron

AKRON

Akron is named for its prime location in Ohio, right in the Northeastern part of the state. The city's name is derived from the Greek word "ἄκρον," which means summit or high point. A manmade canal dividing Akron and Cleveland allowed the city to flourish, along with a railway that's now commemorated with the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. Today, the city's proximity to Cleveland is one of its major draws. Akron's population is about half that of Cleveland's. That gives the city a much friendlier pace and affords its residents a more comfortable urban lifestyle but still grants people access to the benefits Cleveland offers. Cleveland also has Akron to thank for LeBron James, and the hometown rivalry he has with Steph Curry.

Besides the major sports teams in Cleveland, plenty of people drive from Akron to enjoy the Agora. Founded in 1966, the newly-renovated theater has carved out an impressive history, hosting concerts from uber-famous artists like Boston, KISS, ACDC, Bruce Springsteen and more. Plenty of the big-name performers at the Agora got their start here. The city is the hometown of a surprising number of celebrities and corporations. Musical performers James Ingram, Ruby and the Romantics, and Chrissie Hynde are from Akron. Actress Melina Kanakaredes and model Angie Everhart are from here also, along with astronaut Judith Resnick, who died on the Challenger. Pulitzer Prize winner and U.S. Poet Laureate Rita Dove calls Akron home. The Goodrich Corporation, an aerospace and manufacturing company, got its start in Akron in 1870. Eighteen years later, the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company got its start here too.

There is plenty of other amazing history, too. The Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens, a historic house turned into a museum, makes for a fantastic visit. The estate features incredible gardens, a greenhouse, and a carriage house, as well as being one of the largest mansions in the United States.

Akron is also home to some incredible restaurants. The city is known for Midwest comfort food. Some must-visit restaurants include Mr. Zub's Deli at the Matinee, a pet-friendly lunch spot serving up fantastic sandwiches. The Point is a sophisticated Mediterranean joint, offering savory bites like grilled lamb chops which you can couple with expertly crafted martinis and incredible baked goods. If you're interested in Asian cuisine, Cilantro Thai has authentic and delicious curry, as well as fusion sushi.

Another great way to spend some time outdoors is by visiting the Akron Zoo. On top of showing off some incredible animals, the zoo also hosts events and parties, has educational classes and camps for kids to broaden their knowledge of wildlife, and participates in conservation efforts and research.
