BEDFORD

Located just 30 minutes from downtown Cleveland, Bedford, Ohio offers small-town charm with the amenities of urban life nearby. Founded nearly two centuries ago as a timber and milling town, Bedford was a regular stop for stagecoaches on the Cleveland-Pittsburgh route. It was an important part of the Underground Railroad as residents were known for their anti-slavery sentiment and often risked their lives helping escaped slaves avoid recapture.

Fortunately, some of the history that put Bedford on the map has been preserved; the historic district is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. You can visit the Hezekiah Dunham house and get a glimpse of frontier life during the early 19th century. If you are a train lover, the Wheeling and Lake Eire Railway Museum should be your next stop. Inside there is plenty of era-specific railroad memorabilia, and if you are lucky, you might be able to see a train rumbling through the town.

If you're looking for a quiet afternoon outside, the Bedford Reservation is a place where you can escape the hustle of daily life. Part of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, there is something for everyone. On a nice spring day, you can take the family to the Willis Picnic area and spend some time in the sun, walk along the banks of Tinkers Creek Falls, or hike the surrounding trails. For the more adventurous type, several mountain bike trails ring the park. Lastly, you can visit during the winter months and admire the beauty of the frozen-over waterfalls.

For a less frigid experience, you can warm up at Pawnee Lanes and knock some pins down. This family-owned bowling alley has been a staple in the Bedford community since 1947. During the warmer months, there are plenty of family-friendly events that retain Bedford's old-town feel, such as the Strawberry Festival and the Weekend of Pooka, an art-themed festival.

If an otherworldly experience is what you seek, go no further than the Edmund Gleason Farmhouse. Passersby have claimed to see the ghostly figure of a woman at the window and strange lights moving from room to room.

There must be something in the water here as many children of Bedford have risen to fame, including Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry, baseball Hall of Famer Elmer Flick, and NFL players Chris Chambers, Lee Evans, Roger Saffold, Eric Beverly, and Tyvis Powell.

With a slower paced lifestyle at an arm’s length from Cleveland, it is no surprise that many families have chosen to call Bedford home. However, before purchasing that dream home, an inspection for pests and structural issues should be on your list. Fortunately, there is a solution in the name of ProPrecise Property Inspections.
